Default Improving guided injections and biopsies

There has been a bit of discussion on various threads regarding use of US of guided injections and value of having facility of power doppler imaging.

Having been doing increasing numbers of guided injections over the past six months some of which require oblique needle positioning I have been trying to refine my technique (because it I have found at times very laborious and time consuming quickly locating needle tip).

I have found the technique used below very useful and recommend not only to try it but also one of many reasons to make sure if considering US machine purchase that power doppler imaging is included option of equipement purchased for foot/ankle work.

Improved needle-tip visualization by color Doppler sonography

“When in motion, needles and other devices also
produce such a color registration on the color Doppler image;
this is much more easily discernible with color Doppler imaging
than with conventional B-mode gray-scale imaging [8]. This
technique might be useful for either difficult, deep biopsies of
abdominal masses, superficial biopsies in which needle insertion
parallel to the transducer or narrow angle techniques
need to be used, or when small-gauge needles need to be
used and the exact location of the needle tip is difficult to
determine. In addition, biopsy of vascular portions of tumour
masses can be avoided when color Doppler imaging is performed
during aspiration biopsies.”

Attached file for those interested.

Martin
