The glycaemic threshold for diagnosing diabetes mellitus should be lowered from 7.0 to 6.5 mmol/L, endocrinologists say, because this better reflects the risk of microvascular complications such as retinopathy.
The current glycaemic cut-off points for diabetes were derived from rates of all-cause retinopathy in Pima Indian and Egyptians, and should be updated to reflect rates of diabetes-specific retinopathy in wider populations, says Professor Stepehn Colagiuri of the University of Sydney.
