Default Fractured base of fibula and effects on foot function

Podiatry Arena members do not see these ads
patient suffered from base of Fib fracture; and shortly afterwards developed biomechanical abnormalities. (pronation) i am wondering if a fractured fibula could have had any effect upon this. Perhaps the angle of the bone changed? offcourse muscle imbalances cannot be disregarded. Either option; would orthotics prescription be suitable? Thanks..

Hi Greguar:
Are you talking about the distal head? If so, it would depend what type of fracture, at what level (below, at or above the level of the ankle) and what other soft tissue damage the trauma caused.

i do not currently have the exact info concerning the fracture. i only know it was at the distal end around the ankle area(outside ankle swollen). Would orthotics prescription be suitable if this was to blame?

Hi TS:

Prior to considering a treatment, I think you should define your diagnosis.

If, for instance, this patient had a fracture of the fibula above the level of the ankle joint she may have an unstable ankle mortice (which of course would lead to a clinical "pronated" foot);
or there may be an interosseous diastasis; either of these will lead to ankle arthritis. Depending on the mechanism of injury she may have a ruptured deltoid ligament or she may be developing a Posterior Tibial tendon dysfunction due to a tear. She may have had a STJ injury along with her fibular fracture.

EXAMINE EXAMINE EXAMINE - then treat.
