on the spur of the moment I have decided to do run a half marathon in October. I retired from rugby in may, and has found my self going a bit soft around the edges ever since, and I need something to focus some energy on.
I've never been a keen runner, I did a half marathon in 2008 but I was not properly prepared, and it took me more than 3 hours, and I vowed never again!
I know there are some experienced runners on here, what is your best advice to get this going?
I have bought some new Mizuno Wave trainers, and the guy in the running shop was shocked that I'm wearing Laterally posted orthoses on a pronated foot (shock horror), but it helps control my laterally knackered ankle. we've already got them muddy
we? oh yes I've also got Freia the 2 year old Lab to keep me company, and set the pace, although she doesn't get the concept of running a little then walking a little, nor staying on the path all the time. we did 3km today, and probably ran half the distance, with a swim stop (for her) in the middle.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Barefoot runners need not apply (I still can't get past "what if I step in poo!" )

Buy one of those utility belt/bottle carrying things and have each bottle filled with dangerous level of caffeine and sugar based solution ( think vimto mixed with amphetamine), put diclofenac in the front pocket if you really are hell bent on doing this half and are prepared to deal with the consequences afterwards then low dye strap both ankles.
Buy the compression running socks as they are invaluable and wobble board yourself into submission twice a day. Change your running style to a shorter stride/ higher cadence and adapt to almost a cycling style motion.

If I can run a marathon like that I'm damned if you can't
( This advice is not passed to you as a professional but as an idiot who didn't train enough)
