The authors did an identical study last year (only difference being the recruits were from the army rather than the air force):

Injury reduction effectiveness of selecting running shoes based on plantar shape.

Having spent 20 yrs fitting footwear for skiing and bushwalking my response would be....Doh!
It's not a static fitting thing. it's about the dynamic nature of what occurs with the foot under the loads of the activity in question. Get that right and your frequency of pain or discomfort really does decrease. How did we find that out? Offer a money back guarranty on the fit of footwear.....when they don't come back you can be fairly sure they are happy.

We have theory A and theory B; both theories have their supporters. Some evidence shows a problem with theory A; supporters of theory B claim that this proves theory B .... don't figure :bash:

I am not suggesting that what they have done here proves my theory. I am just suggesting that I knew the outcome they would get before they did the work. What gives me confidence in my own ideas is hundreds of N=1 studies over 20 years. There may be some statistical flaws due to my complete ineptitude with maths(which was not done anyway), but it does not change what I saw and did over those years.

Sorry Phil, that was not aimed at you. It was aimed at the sort of interpretations that various people are putting on the research in the links that Ian posted...

...its sort of like "Root theory is wrong", which proves my "{insert name} theory is right" approach.
