Have any of you used a reliable sharpening service for nail nippers? Not being frugal but seems wasteful to just buy new if there's an alternative available. Thank you,

Hi twirly,
used nova instruments some years ago, thye sharpened and re calibrated my oldest nippers. to be honest, they were never as good again and on that basis, next time I wil invest in new and put the £15 sharpening fee towards the new nipper. Having said that, it was at least 10 years before they needed sharpening in the first place so I have had good use out of them.

Nippers are precision cast to close at the tip and, as you apply pressure, then make full contact down the entire blade length.

So sharpening may well change the blade profile and you will find it doesn't give a clean cut........or you might not.

Thank you, your comment is possibly the reason why I have had quite a difficult time obtaining information about sharpening nippers. I guess it's got to be new. Thanks again.

You can sharpen your own nippers with absolute certainty that you will not jeapordise set angles etc. The trick is to hold them closed and grind along both edges at once from the underside (flat side), proximal to distal, removing minimal metal. 1 or 2 light passes with a standard diamond cylinder is all that is required.
Re-polish with a felt wheel and Cif kitchen cleaner.

All nippers can be sharpened , but never to the quality of the "manufactured edge". Most podiatrists who have had nippers sharpened only seem to have it done once , then buy new. I declare my interest here - I run Bailey Instruments in Manchester ,Uk . We can arrange for sharpening but at a cost. The skillbase has just about dried up. We used to use an excellent guy in Sheffield ,but he has retired now.
Some podiatrists are very good at sharpening their own nippers . However you do have to be careful not to damage the passivated layer on the steel surface. If you do damage this layer then your edges will discolour.
We are able to recommend a UK based company for sharpeningif you want to go down that line. Hope this helps.

We do sharpen nippers and guaratee that they work as well if not better after they have been sharpened.the problem is that we are in Australia.Quite a lot of nippers need the jaws aligned before sharpening which we also do.We also weld cracked hinges and replace broken springs and stripped threads in screws etc etc.We also sell new instruments.We call it remanufacturing.Quite a lot of sub standard instruments are coming out of Pakistan now and while they look good they are not good value for money.I hope this helps.

I can endorse Prosharp. their work is excellent. They have repaired joints for me and their sharpening means I have been able to incorporate 10 second hand pairs of clippers easily into my sets as well as older pairs. Top job, top people.
