Hi all! This is my first post on PodArena.

Firstly to introduce myself I am a second year Podiatry student. Another year to go and soon I too will get the title of a podiatrist.
Anyhow, a 45 year old uncle of mine experiences pain in his left leg (around his mid butt to his knee). His pain only comes about when he's asleep (either laid/ seates - i.e. on a plane) and is very "annoying and irritating" (not sharp but "aching") that it wakes him up. When he awakes from it he mentions that it settles down within a few minutes and goes away. He also has swelling at his ankle both in weight-bearing and non weight-bearing.
He has had his varicose vein removed from his left leg (2005) - as it was fused. However he has been experiencing the described pain a long time before.
Reading material online I was wondering if some differential diagnosis could be:

1) Sciatic pain?
2) Meralgia Paresthetica?
3) Arthritis?
I am not too sure of why he's experiencing the pain. Any guidance would be most appreciated- any diagnosis/ treatment plans/ any other advice.

Please share all your knowledge.
Have a blessed & wonderful day.
Kind Regards
Munrith
