Hi all! This is my first post on PodArena. Firstly to introduce myself I am a second year Podiatry student. Another year to go and soon I too will get the title of a podiatrist.

Anyhow, a 45 year old uncle of mine experiences pain in his left leg (around his mid butt to his knee). His pain only comes about when he's asleep (either laid/ seates - i.e. on a plane) and is very "annoying and irritating" (not sharp but "aching") that it wakes him up. When he awakes from it he mentions that it settles down within a few minutes and goes away. He also has swelling at his ankle both in weight-bearing and non weight-bearing.

He has had his varicose vein removed from his left leg (2005) - as it was fused. However he has been experiencing the described pain a long time before.

Reading material online I was wondering if some differential diagnosis could be:
1) Sciatic pain?
2) Meralgia Paresthetica?
3) Arthritis?

I am not too sure of why he's experiencing the pain. Any guidance would be most appreciated- any diagnosis/ treatment plans/ any other advice. Please share all your knowledge.

Have a blessed & wonderful day.

Kind Regards
Munrith

I think the best advice is to simply have your uncle make an appointment with a physician, perhaps an orthopedic surgeon.

While I applaud your enthusiasm in posting your question to the members of Podiatry Arena I would also advise a moment of caution before requesting treatment plans & online diagnosis without your uncle being appropriately assessed & diagnosed by a qualified medical professional.

As a student your family & peers may well ask your advice RE: many physical anomolies. The danger could lie if you unwittingly attempt a diagnosis & inappropriate treatment plan (however well intended).

My advice too is in agreement with Lab guy (Steven).

After this has happened perhaps you could update this thread on his diagnosis & treatment. I feel sure then other members will be more than happy to debate potential differential diagnosis & alternative treatments they may be familiar with.

Kindest regards,

Mandy.

PS All the very best success in your final year.
