Just came across this article published near the beginning of the barefoot running fad where Mark Cuccuzzella, MD, and myself were interviewed regarding barefoot running and minimalist running shoes in Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine from October 2010. It is very interesting reading the comments from Dr. Cuccuzzella now four years later and since the barefoot running fad has all but vanished from the scene.

Yep; the science has not supported all those claims we were told 4-5yrs ago that it would.
So many runners have also gone back to what they were familiar with before, after falling for all the promises they were made that did not eventuate or gone to the opposite end of the spectrum (maximalism).

Lots of alarm bells were rung when the barefoot fad started due to all the injuries that were happening (it started at about the same time as the global financial crisis, so barefoot running was a big economic stimulus package for those who treat a lot of running injuries).

Now we in the situation, 4-5 yrs later where the Hoka One One now probably outsell the entire minimalist category of running shoes .... and we not seeing the same influx of injuries with 'maximialism' as there was with 'minimalism'

Who remembers that tweet from 4-5yrs ago (that I did not bookmark) that implied that barefoot running was going to put podiatry out of business? ... look what happened!

Depends on how you want to look at it. The preponderance of the evidence has come down on one side and runners have voted with their feet.

It is still continuing as a Manufactroversy- ie a manufactured controversy - that is creating a controversy when none exists.

Those who have so firmly hung their hats on one side are either now changing their tunes or gone silent or getting all bitter and twisted

    Aloha,

At least minimalist shoes take up less land fill space for the next 10,000 years.

And do not flotsam up my beach walks as much...

Thinking of our children's children's children.
