All, we are a couple of hours away from the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic games in London.
The eyes of the world are on "the village" AKA, "that London". I started this thread to gain an international appreciation of how the games progress. We get a British perspective via our news and media here, whether this is the same as the "world view", or not, may be a completely different thing. Let us know... We already put the wrong flag up for the North Koreans at the women's football... nice work.
So, lets sit back and enjoy the highs and the lows of the 2012 Olympic games, together as an international community, united here on Podiatry Arena...
I not putting any money on Beckham!! Bannister would be a good choice.

The Arena'ettes will not be happy when they get up - our saturday AM ritual of watching the Thunderbirds together will not be happening!

Redgrave has already carried the torch and has been on the BBC doing interviews. Doesn't rule him out...

Having just experienced another circus in the Open at Royal Lytham - it'll be interesting to see the public reaction once the media luvvies depart for the next glitzy party - probably a few days shelling in Syria or Palestine (both attending the games). Instead of gold medals they could've been competing for disputed territorial rights or whatever they are fighting for in their own country. Could've put the UK and USA on the defensive though. .....
Hope it's worth the £12bn of taxpayers money - or rather £12bn of additional national debt.... Apart from that would someone please keep Paul Macartney in a locked cupboard from now on.....

I was all set to be cynical but I stand corrected. We didn't do it better or worse than the chinese, we did it DIFFERENT. We did it BRITISH.
And did anyone else spot the czech republic came in wearing wellies and holding brollies?! Yeah laugh it up guys, your climate ain't all that either .

Bit of a curates egg, I thought but I suppose that you can't make all of the people happy all of the time. Personally, I would have liked to see a bit more Shakespeare, a wider choice of British music (where, oh where, were the Taffy male voice choirs and the Sawney's with their bagpipes.) I once saw 'Abide With Me' sung by a Welsh male voice choir backed by a silver band and it was heart rending. I just hope that TV commentators around the world were given full briefings, otherwise Glastonbury Tor and the Thorn would have been meaningless, and the references to British Soap Operas would have escaped them altogether (lucky them).
The industrial revolution scene and the casting of the Olympic rings was stunning though, and the cauldron with the lighting by the next generation of athletes was inspired.
I go along with Mark - it's time for Macca to retire gracefully. However, Bean was wonderful (ably backed up by that Scouse Brummie, Simon Rattle and, of course, the great humour of Her Maj with the parachute scene.
Have to disagree. Atkinson was brilliant in NTNON, Cook & Co, Blackadder and of course both of the Policemans Balls....but `Bean` Just don`t get it. Never have. I find the character immensley irritating.
The rest was Ok, though. Guess the Multiple Personality Disorder of Britain shone forth.
Great Britain’s marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe will end her career without an Olympic gold medal in her collection after it was confirmed she was withdrawing from the race in London with a foot injury.
Radcliffe, who had gone without a medal in four Olympic appearances despite being the women’s world record holder in the marathon and a former world champion, had a long-standing issue with osteoarthritis in her left foot that flared up again last month. ‘‘Shall we flip a coin?’’ remarked Britain’s head coach, Charles Van Commenee, of Radcliffe’s chances of starting in the women’s marathon only days ago.
From what I can ascertain she has had OA of the first MPJ/hallux rigidus/structural hallux limitus for>20yrs and was apparently told back then that she would not be able to run ... well she went on to break the womens world record. Would be interesting to know how it was managed?

How old are the female gymnasts? Some of them, especially those from the Chinese team, look about 10-12 years of age? Very few of them appear to have secondary sexual characteristics. I wonder how many have amenorrhea?

Watching the swimming with one and she asked "Can we go there and do that?" I explained that its going to take about 10 000 hours of training, getting up at 4.00AM every day etc etc. To which she replied "I can do that" .... so watch out for her at the 2028 Olympics
The other one just wants to know why the girls in the track run in their underwear?

I'm in training for 2016, I've worked hard for days now and got my pb down to 3'27" for "entering the water after getting to poolside". I once swam 25 metres without stopping so I'm so confident, I'm going for GOLD, GOLD, GOLD!
