Does anyone know how much tax relief we can claim back from revenue and customs for Society of Chiropody and Podiatry membership? According to the HMRC we can claim tax relief on it and to check the amount with the society, but the society have not replied to my message.
As far as I know you can claim the whole amount back. It is a membership of a professional body which you require to be able to do your job. Ditto the insurance aspect of the fee.
I claim it all and my accountant hasn't advised otherwise.

Not strictly true, as many podiatrists who no longer subscribe to any professional body will confirm. But, you are correct in that you can claim the whole amount as your accountant does not require you to provide a breakdown of insurance and membership fee to a professional body, should you wish to belong to one.
Thanks for that. I thought that the HPC would require a registrant to be a member of a recognised group? Is that not so?
Best wishes
Nick
Nope, `tis not so. Many pods have chosen to go it alone, for various reasons. We are only obliged to carry professional indemnity insurance and demonstrate how our CPD meets their `standards`, if called upon to do so, to maintain registration with the HPC.
"Political Correctness" is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end

HMRC does not stipulate that a business expense has to be a necessity, you don't need to have a car or business cards but if you do they are a legitimate business expense. Your membership fee is a legitimated business expense @ 20% of £355 (£372.50 by d/d)= £71 (74.41) (assuming you are a practising UK Podiatrist paying basic rate of income tax) but you don't need to know that you just need to include the £355 in your total outgoings. Why do you need to ask SoCaP how much you pay in membership fees? Don't you have an accountant? Is £71 crucial to the success of your business? Maybe your not self employed and are claiming the cost against PAYE but it is still a legitimate expense to carry out your trade/profession. Are you having a slow day?

My accountant has always put mine through under the heading "Professional Fees" I've never had a problem. I think its is a 'justifiable business expense' in their world.
Thanks everyone for your help. I am claiming it back through PAYE as I now work for the NHS. I used to have a small private set-up so my accountant used to claim the whole lot back through 'professional membership and insurance'. I didn't know whether I could claim the whole £355 back or just the £71 tax. I asked the HMRC who said check with the society and have not had a reply. HPC info was easy to find on their website, can only claim back the tax on that though.
