Does any one have any experience with using an air cast boot to treat chronic heel pain.

    Is it effective?
How long does a patient wear it?
    any advice would be appreciated.

Really depends on what the problem is. It would be useful if you can give at least a provisional diagnosis... Do you mean recalcitrant plantar fasciitis?

Yes, there seem to be different types of Cam walkers.

I had in mind a boot starting below the knee, that could be inflated to achieve the desired compression/support.

Any information in regards to which type you use would be great.

I used the term 'chronic heel pain' as I wanted to keep the post focused on the cam walker, rather than another debate on plantar faciitis

If you have used it for recalictrant plantar fasciitis, It would be great if you could share your experiences.

If our fasciosis patients don't respond to conservative care pretty quickly we usually get them a diagnostic US - 9 times out of 10 they have a intra-substance tear. I then weigh up the options, and some times a cam walker (air cast or not) is useful for periods of immobilization, from 4-6 weeks at a time, along with NSAIDs, some physio and activity modification. After this period if their symptoms have settled (most do) I put them into an orthoses with appropriate footwear. We also use them for a ton of other stuff lower limb related.

  7. Yes - occassionally use it for chronic calcaneal bursitis for up to 4 weeks. Patient wears it for all weightbearing activities, removing it only to bathe, apply ice packs 4 times daily and sleeping.
