Polk County Auditor Michael Mauro on Thursday officially announced his bid for secretary of state.

Mauro is the second person and the only Democrat to declare his candidacy for the post. The election is in November 2006.

Republican Chuck Allison, a Des Moines podiatrist, is also running. Current Secretary of State Chet Culver is running for governor.

Mauro, 57, has administered elections in Iowa's largest county the past two decades. He has been in the midst of controversial elections and election changes statewide and in Des Moines.

"I want to take my experience, passion and vision to the secretary of state's office," Mauro said. "I will work to cut through the red tape and make the office more user-friendly."

Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack joined Mauro at a fundraising rally at St. Anthony's Parish Hall for the official announcement Thursday.

Vilsack said the secretary of state is key to ensuring elections remain free and fair. He lauded Mauro as one who recognizes the needs of voters and the struggles of small business owners.

Mauro thanked the estimated 350 people at the rally for their support and said his experience as Polk County auditor will transfer well to a bigger job.

"You need somebody who's been in the trenches and somebody who's worked on elections - somebody who knows how things work," Mauro said.

Mauro has been a small-business owner and holds a real estate broker license.
