For the second year in a row, a Victorian was pitted against interstate girls chosen by Myer to take their Fashions on the Field competition to a national level.
It made the triumph all the more sweet for Brunswick podiatry student Laura Gleich, who took the honours in the women's classic race wear event in an outfit made by her mother, Annette Gay.
Laura beat more than 250 entrants on Derby Day, putting her in to compete yesterday against the winners from Cup Day and Oaks Day.
Winning the Victorian final, the 20-year-old then took her place in the national final.
Watching quietly from the sidelines was Laura's mum, who pieced the outfit together in two days.
The violet skirt was pleated and gathered by a red cummerbund around the waist and offset with a cream camisole under a matching cream mini-bolero jacket.
"I'm trying to catch my breath," Ms Gay said. "She's such a lovely girl too.
"Laura gave me confidence that I could do it for her and I gave it a go . . . I'm so happy."
Entering has paid dividends for the mother-daughter team, taking home prizes including a SAAB convertible, a trip for two to Dubai and a $5000 Myer shopping voucher.
Laura, who will sit university exams today, said she planned to take her mum on her trip to the Dubai World Cup in March.
