The University of Western Australia’s new program in Podiatric Medicine received a significant boost today with the announcement of $2.5 million of Federal funding to support the facilities from which the course will be delivered.
UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said he was extremely pleased that the Federal Government had recognised the importance to the State of the University’s new Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine.
He said that UWA’s Podiatric Medicine degree would be offered from 2006 and would be the only podiatry program offered in Western Australia.
"This is an exciting new addition to the degree course offered through the University’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in 2006.
"The program is designed to produce highly trained and competent podiatrists, well prepared to commence clinical practice as primary contact health care practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the foot and ankle," Professor Robson said.
He said that with the increasing prevalence of a range of diseases which impacted on the foot and ankle, there was increasing demand for the skills associated with the new course.
The funding was announced today by the Federal Minister for Education under the Government’s support for capital developments at universities across Australia.
