Call me old fashioned, but I still like my tinea sufferers up here in hot, steamy Queensland to do some regular soaks in KMnO4 concurrent with topical terbinafine.
Unfortunately I am told by my local pharmacist, from whom I obtain said stuff, that the "Government" has stopped the supply of this useful powder, as it "could" be a key component for bomb-making in this heightened fear state we enjoy living in.
Hence I am down to my last crumbs of the stuff, with I ration out to the most deserving of spore-laden soles.
Anyone else having difficulty getting KMnO4 in Australia? Any other means of getting it around?
Potassium permanganate is used in the production of cocaine in an unstable form. Suppliers and manufacturers of Class A drugs are therefore prepared to go to considerable lengths to acquire the chemicals they need, and the smuggling of tonnes of chemicals across international borders to the areas of illicit drug production is a key aspect of the trades. More elaborate methods are also used. In some instances, suppliers have formed front companies and carried out some legitimate business in order to provide cover for chemical diversion. Mail services have also been used to smuggle smaller quantities of precursors, especially those used in the illicit manufacture of amphetamine-type stimulants. In the case of MDMA, precursors have been advertised and ordered online.
I think this is a new excuse for beaurocracy to stick its nose it.
Chemists still sell pseudoephidrine in enough volume to make it a core revenue earner for the humble pharmacry practice (particularly in cold and flu season). This, in an era of unprecedented monitoring of amphetamine precursors by Government.
If pseudoephidine can still be sold over the counter in every pharmacy in the country, why then can't small quantities of KMnO4 still be obtained by a registered health professional to dispense - a little bit last years!
I think this is a new excuse for beaurocracy to stick its nose it. Bloody ridiculous!
When potassium permanganate is combined with another commonly-used OTC product, the resultant mixture becomes highly volatile and incendiary and under optimum conditions, highly explosive, which is probably why it has been withdrawn.

I'm sure a terrorist, given optimum conditions, could do something with my lipstick and some window cleaner if he wanted....should we have to lose access to everything in the name of fear????
It's always a minority to ruin it for the rest of us.
OFITG...who likes saving money by buying her Panadol Sinus in bulk at the start of spring! I did actually ask my pharmacist about the restrictions - apparently if I don't look like drug manufacturer then I can still buy them! Loving the "stringent" guidelines!!
When I worked in a lab we could get KMnO4 for (legitimate) use from our chemcial suppliers. Is that a posssibility for Pods (rather than through the pharmacy).
I agree, it is ridiculously 'stringent'. Pretty much everything has the potential to be harmful if misused - consider the humble Black's File. Imagine that in the hands of a would be felon; tearing out the onychophosis with narry a thought for the comfort of their victim. Oh dear, I'm talking about the 1st year students again.
Hey Cameron, your knowledge of matters criminal is somewhat daunting. Any priors you want to reveal?
