Default Podiatric Vs Orthopaedic surgery in NHS

Hi Pods,

Was wondering whether anyone had any information or research which looks at a comparison between Podiatric and Orthopaedic surgery?

In my NHS trust we are looking at introducing a Podiatris surgical unit, but are not really sure how to go about this. If anyone has done this or has any information regarding setting up a Podiatric surgical unit within an NHS trust i would love to hear from you!

Thanks, Paul.

Hi Paul

I think that what this is it's looking more or less; Helm RH, Ravi K. Podiatric surgery and orthopedic surgery: a customer satisfaction survey of general practitioners. The Foot. 2003;13(1):53-54.

The other article is also interesting; Kilmartin TE. Podiatric Surgery in a Community Trust; a review of activity, surgical outcomes, complications and patient satisfaction over a 4 year period. The Foot. 2001;11(4):218-227.

greetings,

Jonatan

Hi Paul:

Not sure what you are asking for.

Do you mean outcomes of foot/ankle surgery performed by Orthopedic and Podiatric trained surgeons?

There are differences in the type of practice between a Podiatric Foot & Ankle surgeon and a Orthopedic Foot & ANkle surgeon.

Some podiatric foot/ankle surgeons perform procedures other than those that might be considered classic orthopedic, i.e., Warts, nails, wound care, etc..... Others do primarily orthopedic foot and ankle surgery, including trauma.
An orthopedic trained foot/ankle surgeon normally take call in an orthopedic call rotation whereas the podiatric trained foot/ankle surgeon is limited in his scope of practice.

As far as outcomes: This is tricky since you are many times comparing apples to oranges.
Comparing a general orthopedic to a podiatric foot/ankle surgeon; or a forefoot trained podiatrist to an Orthopedic foot & ankle surgeon, on and on with any combinations therein.

Paul,
Have you contacted the faculty of surgery, SCP ?

Also There was a study published relatively recently, I think by the Swindon NHS trust, comparing outcomes/satisfaction between pod surg & ortho surg.

As also mentioned Tim Kilmartins retropective is a good read, he also did another study comparing ortho + pod surgery - google is your friend!

A previous trust of mine had the same problem, they didn't know where to start!

As already mentioned the Faculty of Surgery of SCP would be a good place to start.

Have a chat to your regional dean of surgery.

Go and observe a few units, they are normally more than happy to have people take an interest, it gives you a vital insight into the workings of a pod surg team, plus you could gather info from the people working there.
