A rest home has been criticised by the health and disability commissioner for its treatment of an elderly woman who died after her foot turned gangrenous.
Commissioner Ron Paterson investigated after receiving a complaint from the 72-year-old woman's daughter.
The daughter, known in Mr Paterson's report as Ms B, said her mother was in extreme pain and not given the relief she needed, and that she would not have died from gangrene if a podiatrist had been called in to treat her mother's right foot when the family asked.
"The way she died in such terrible pain from the gangrene could have been prevented," she told Mr Paterson. ...
