Podiatrist charged with sexually assaulting patient
July 11, 2006
Quote:
A podiatrist accused of sexually assaulting a 75-year-old woman who came to his office for a foot treatment had bond set Tuesday at $250,000.

Anthony Overton, 61, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton. Criminal Court Judge Lauren M. Sullivan set bond at $250,000, Simonton said.

The 75-year-old female patient went to Overton's podiatrist office at 9600 S. Halsted on June 6 because she had pain her right foot, according to court records. The doctor’s assistant took the woman to a room, gave her a gown and told her to disrobe and put the gown on, the record states, and the victim complied.

Overton then came into the room, had the woman sit on the examining table, opened her robe and allegedly fondled her breasts, according to court records. He then allegedly penetrated her vagina with his finger, and used that same finger to penetrate her rectum.

The podiatrist then left the room, and the assistant took the victim to a different room for an X-ray, the record states. Overton then walked in and handed the victim a prescription for a vaginal yeast infection, court records show.

On June 14, the victim was experiencing stomach and vaginal pain, so she went to an area hospital, where she told authorities that Overton had sexually assaulted her, according to court records.

Overton was slated to return to court July 31 for a preliminary hearing, Simonton said.

Default More women come forward

The Chicago Sun Times are reporting:
Three More Women Claim Abuse By Podiatrist
Quote:
Three more women have alleged they were fondled by an Olympia Fields podiatrist recently charged with sexually assaulting a 76-year-old woman.

Anthony Overton Jr., 61, is slated to appear in court Monday for allegedly assaulting an elderly woman in June during an exam. He was charged July 10, and bail was set at $250,000.

The woman sought care for pain in her right foot and ankle, according to police reports. Overton allegedly fondled her breasts and, with his finger, penetrated her vagina and rectum, according to reports.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault for the attack on the elderly woman, a felony that carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison, said Andy Conklin, a Cook County state's attorney's spokesman.

Overton also is charged with one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which carries a penalty of up to seven years.

The three other victims contacted authorities after media reported the alleged sexual assault of the elderly woman.

The women accuse Overton of fondling them at his Chicago medical office or in a hospital bed awaiting surgery. Police reports say the incidents occurred between October 2004 and June 2006.

According to one report, Overton fondled a woman's breast and outer area of her vagina as she lay in a hospital bed awaiting minor foot surgery.

No charges stemming from the new complaints were filed as of Friday, News Affairs Officer Kristina Schuler said. Calumet Area detectives are investigating, she said.

The complaints prompted the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to suspend Overton's license, the agency said Friday.

That means Overton, of 21032 Apollo Circle in Olympia Fields, no longer can practice medicine in Illinois, at least until he goes before the department's Podiatric Medical Board on Aug. 22 and 23, board spokeswoman Susan Hofer said. Overton's office is at 9600 S. Halsted St., Chicago.

"Our belief is that there's a danger to the health and safety of the public by allowing (Overton) to continue to practice," Hofer said.

The board suspends licenses when there is an "imminent danger to the health and safety to the general public or to himself," she said. The state has not disciplined Overton before, Hofer said.

A phone message left for William Hooks, a Chicago attorney who is representing Overton, was not returned Friday.

Default Podiatrist called sex assault a free exam 'favor': woman

OMG
Podiatrist called sex assault a free exam 'favor': woman
Quote:
A 76-year-old woman who needs a cane to walk testified Monday that a Chicago foot doctor sexually assaulted her in his office and then allegedly told the woman he'd done her a "favor" because he hadn't charged her.

"He kind of had a smile on his face," the woman testified, describing Anthony Myles Overton Jr.'s demeanor during the alleged June 6 assault at his office in 9600 block of South Halsted.

Just a few minutes after Judge Thomas Hennelly approved the sex assault charges against Overton Monday, the podiatrist was re-arrested on the 26th and California courthouse steps. Police suspect Overton assaulted one more female victim, and they say three others have come forward to authorities.

Lawyer blames greed:
Overton's attorney, William H. Hooks, told reporters that greed may have motivated the alleged victims to report their claims to authorities. Asked why a 76-year-old woman would make up such a claim, Hooks replied: "You don't get pure of heart strictly based on how old you are. Money is money. ... Greed comes in many forms."

Prosecutors say the woman came to the doctor's practice for a foot exam June 6. While Overton was alone with the woman, he told her to undress and slip into a medical gown. Overton then allegedly rubbed her back, her breasts and sexually assaulted her with his fingers, prosecutors say. Later that day, when the woman called Overton to tell him she was in pain, he allegedly told her: "I did you a favor. I didn't charge you for the exam.''

During Monday's hearing, Hooks repeatedly asked the woman why she never asked Overton to stop what he was doing.

"I told him I was hurting," the woman replied.
