Reuters are reporting: Chinese fans wake up to World Cup hangover July 12, 2006 05:41:56 AM PST

A month of sleepless nights and heavy drinking during the World Cup has caused a giant national hangover, state media reported on Wednesday.
China is obsessed with football but is six hours ahead of Germany, meaning many of the games were shown late at night or in the early hours of the morning -- peak drinking times.
"Dozens of people have visited my office since Monday reporting various kinds of illnesses," the China Daily quoted Professor Ma Genshan, from Nanjing University, as saying.
"Staying awake and being excited may cause harm to those people with liver and lung problems."
Excessive drinking had just made the problem worse, he added.
The end of the World Cup had also presented problems for drug addicts.
"Addicts who were trying to give up their habit ... have been struggling since the end of the tournament," it said.
Plain, drug- and alcohol-free office workers have also suffered.
"After a month of continuous expectation and disappointment, I am completely exhausted," Liu Yuanyuan, from Nanjing, was quoted as saying.
"I have asked for a whole week's leave from work."
At least 11 people died in China during the tournament as a result of heart attacks and excitement-related problems, state media said earlier.
