Default British Recent Grad Seeking Work

Podiatry Arena members do not see these ads
Hi,

I am a 24yr old male recent grad Podiatrist from the UK. I graduated in June 2008 and have since been working as a full-time locum in various trusts in London within the National Health Service (NHS). My duties have included general clinics, diabetic wound management, home visits and some paediatrics and biomechanics.

I am due to arrive in Australia on May 1st 2009 on a one-year Working Holiday Visa and will be available for work immediately. Due to the restrictions of the visa I am only eligible to work with the same employer for a maximum of 6 months. However, it is a desire of mine to permanently emigrate to Australia and therefore, given the right opportunity I would happily begin the process with the right employer.

I have a strong interest and background in sport regularly playing football, running, surf-life-saving and swimming. Due to this, I wish to pursue a career in the Biomechanics / Sports Injuries side of Podiatry. I feel it is necessary to relocate to Australia to develop my career in Biomechanics owing to the fantastic opportunities there.

Therefore I am looking for positions from all Podiatric backgrounds, but one ideally that will allow me to gain vital Biomech experience. I am looking for work in the Sydney area but will be more than happy to consider positions from other locations.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I can provide a copy of my CV and relevant certificates.

Thanks

Phil Taylor

Hi Phil

I presume you have NSW Podiatrists Board registration already? And you've had your medical too, I'm guessing? If not, you can get your reg in person, but make sure you've all the required documents with you.

You could try an agency for locum work, or possibly the APodC site.

I have it on very good authority that employers in general are not so keen to get involved in 457 (employer sponsorship) visas at present, do I think your best bet would be to apply for an onshore 175 (skilled independent migration) visa if you wish to stay long-term. The 175 is good anyway, because it is a permanent residence visa (multiple entry, so no resident return visa needed). After 4 years you can apply for citizenship, should you wish to do so. As it's an independent visa it means that you are not tied to a specific employer; the disadvantage is that it's more expensive (for you) to acquire than sponsorship - around £1k I think. But you'd have already had your meds done (& maybe your police check), and your APodC skills assessment, so that only leaves the visa fee.

If you want any advice/help with regard to this, PM me & I'll do my best. I've recently been granted a 175, so I know about the process first-hand.

Another good source of info about visas can be found on www.pomsinoz.com - you'll find me if you read a few threads. I found the site really helpful, just wish I'd found it before I put in my visa application; although it was actually pretty straightforward.

Good luck

Sarah

Hi Emmers

Sorry for the rather late reply - have been busy trying to get things together for my move to Aus!

You can only claim the max points for Aus if you've done the IELTS (English language test) & scored (I think, but you'd have to check) 7+ in all elements.

www.immi.gov.au has all the info you should need about visa applications. I'm not sure how long processing is taking at the mo, as there have been several changes to the system in response to the global economic situation.

Let me know if you need any more help (PM me if you prefer).

Sarah
