ARTHRITIS RESEARCH CAMPAIGN

GRADUATE RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS FOR PODIATRISTS

University of Leeds

University of Southampton

An opportunity for newly qualifying podiatry students interested in developing a career pathway in research to get hands-on experience of working in a research-led university.

The internships are based in podiatry and rheumatology and run for eight weeks over summer (29th June – 22nd August 2009). The internship will provide the opportunity to develop skills in scientific research, working with some of the UK’s leading medical and allied health researchers in rheumatology and with state of the art equipment. During the eight weeks, accommodation is provided and reasonable living and travel costs are paid via arc funding.

Interns will be provided an opportunity to participate in hands-on basic science and clinical projects through an educational experience that exposes them to leading edge practice in research and development. The internship offers formal education, supervision, evaluation and mentoring. Opportunities will be provided to participate in multi-professional seminars and workshops.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 23rd April 2009.

Candidates must have a strong interest in developing a research career in a field related to musculoskeletal foot disorders. They will have a basic knowledge of the rheumatic diseases and lower limb biomechanics. Competent computer skills with word processing and spreadsheet calculations are necessary.

Potential opportunities include:

Working within a multi-professional research environment

Following patients through a multi-professional data collection protocol

Involvement in the data collection process

Exposure to technologies such as diagnostic ultrasound and gait lab work

The potential to run a self-contained study or analysis

Experience of the research governance process

There will also be an opportunity for the interns from both sites to meet during the programme and present their experience to the teams at both Universities.

For further information please contact either Cathy Bowen (cjb5@soton.ac.uk)

or Anthony Redmond (a.redmond@leeds.ac.uk)

Applications are invited via an informal expression of interest along with your CV to the email addresses above by 23rd April. Interviews will take place by telephone on 7th May 2009.

Your expression of interest should be no more than one page of A4.

You should explain why you want to do the internship and what your current ambitions are within rheumatology clinical practice and research.
