I wonder if you could help with the following query regarding sepsis.

Is the infection and sepsis of a wound related to the size of the wound or lesion. I have not been able to find any references to this.

I have been reading about quorum sensing signalling molecules. Does this mean that the larger infecting colonies of pathogens are able to sense the presence of more of its kind and increase its virulence by producing more pathogenic substances like enzymes, protease, and other toxins.
Would this mean that the larger lesion could accomodate a larger population of microbes and so sepsis would be more virulent?

I don't know about size, but depth has been assessed - a new study by Lavery LA, Armstrong DG, Mrdoch DP, Peters EJG and Lipsky BA "Validation of the infectious diseases society of america's diabetic foot infection classification system" Clinical Infectious Disesease 2007:44; 562-565. Show depth of wounds and infection - looking at grades of infection: the deeper the wound the more likley infection will be more severe....
