Default University age limit for training

Podiatry Arena members do not see these ads
My husband and myself was out having a few too many last night and got chatting to another couple (very nice and friendly) the lady is RGN and wants to have a career change. She has applied to her local university to train as a podiatrist but is concerned over her age (50). I said i didn't know about the upper age limit but i might know someone who does so i thought i'd ask you guys. I also said to speak to the university she has applied to and she replied that she already has and they said there is no upper age limit but she's afraid that they are just saying that and she may not get a place.......would this be classed as age discrimination!!!

Is there an upper age limit?

I graduated in 1996, and they were 3 or 4 students in their 50s in my cohort.
None of them failed, and all coped extremely well with studying.

I have a lovely pension lady in my class. She's 60 when she joined the course. She's a great player too in th course.

Hence, I don't see age is concern when one wants to study. But just bear in mind when it comes to employment.

I had three people in my cohort over the age of 50.
THey fitted in well most of the time and offered another perspective to many things - they came from many different backgrounds, nursing, social work, medicine....
Two went into private practice, I think that they may have had concerns regarding employment, but the other had job offers coming out of her ears! I think that employing an older person definately has it's advantages...they are less likely to leave after a year and go overseas for example....
Tell your friend to go for it! Why not?! It's a great profession for people of alll ages!

Well there are two of us in our last year who are over 50 and at least 3 in the 2nd year. I suppose the average age in the 3rd year is around mid 30's.

It's not easy going back to structured learning after so many years and I am sure that there are many easier degrees and my brain often hurts but I can't wait to finish and get out there and practice what 4 long years of learning has taught me :)

Tell them to go for it...........
