The Running Times newsletter just turned up in my inbox and solved a great mystery for me. Where did ASICS come from? What does it mean?
Quote:
ASICS, an acronym derived from the Latin phrase, Anima Sana In Corpore Sano - a sound mind in a sound body
...I never knew that.

True.

Learned this when I first read Pitch Invasion: Adidas, Puma and the making of modern sport

http://www.amazon.com/Pitch-Invasion...7177762&sr=8-1

Its a great book. ASICS was formed by the owner of Tiger when NIke started making their own shoes instead of just being the USA distributors. They hit the world scene when Lasse Viren won the Montreal 10k in them.

They've always had the acronym printed on their shoeboxes Craig - may I suggest (boldly) a symptom of conference-supplied footwear without boxes?

A dear (now-departed) patient of mine taught me a small latin phrase.....

..." Crestula postula qom minimum"........(apologies for spelling mistakes)

Rough Translation: Place the minimum faith in Tommorow, it is only a possiblity.

In other words, we have today, but tommorow............?

I use this:
http://my.bigpond.com/internetplans/...ireless/about/
Works anywhere in the world - no need to pay exorbitant hotel or airport charges .... i was even able to stop in the middle of no where in Tassie this AM while stopped on the side of the road to respond to a problem that needed some info sent!

Skype is also awesome --- especially with the Arena'ettes and their grandparents in another country - can hook live web cam up to it ... (I can even call the wife on it from another room in the house - saves shouting :) )

Default Sad day for ASICS

Kyodo News are reporting:
Asics founder Onitsuka dies at 89
Quote:
Kihachiro Onitsuka, founder of Asics Corp., a sports and leisure products manufacturer, died of heart failure at a hospital in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, on Saturday, his family said. He was 89.
Onitsuka, chairman of the major sports goods maker, founded Asics's predecessor Onitsuka Co. as a sports shoe maker in Kobe in 1949. The company changed its corporate name to Asics after merging with two sports wear makers in 1977.

I learnt today that ASICs also stands for application-specific integrated circuits
