Best Walking Cities: Is Yours One Of Them?
Quote:
With rising U.S. obesity rates, experts are urging Americans to get off the couch and get moving -- namely, to walk.

But not every city's residents are stepping up their walking regimens. For the third year, the American Podiatric Medical Association conducted a walking study as part of its Best Walking City Competition.

The association surveyed 200 U.S. cities on three walking conducive categories: healthy lifestyles, modes of transportation to and from work, and involvement in fitness and sport activities.

Arlington, Va., came out on top of the list, with 23 percent of the city's workers using public transportation to get around -- which requires more walking than driving does -- and 35 percent of residents walk for exercise.

Rounding out the top five are San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Boston.

At the bottom of the list were three California cities -- Moreno Valley, Bakersfield and Palmdale -- and two Texas cities -- Brownsville and Laredo.

"Walking is one of the best exercises for your feet," said Dr. Lloyd Smith, the association's president. "The Best Walking City Competition encourages Americans living in cities to get out and walk in an effort to keep their feet and bodies fit."

Default Best Walking Cities - Good PR tool?

Hi all,

I'm the PR Officer for the Australian Podiatry Association (Vic) (I'm also a podiatrist) and the topic of Walking is currently being thrown around as a potential area for promotion for podiatry in Australia.

I've seen on this site and also on others (news and APMA etc) about the USA Best Walking Cities promotion and it appears to be getting a lot of coverage.

However, I guess I'm looking for some feedback from practitioners in the US about how successful you feel it has been and if you think it has had benefits for the profession over there.

I would certainly appreciate any comments, because from my perspective this seems to be a really well thought out and effective campaign. I would hope that we would be able to do a similar type campaign here in Australia.

Regards,

Katrina Richards :)
