GEELONG coach Mark Thompson is refusing to give up on the prospect of the injured Matthew Egan returning to the game this season, despite the defender undergoing surgery on Tuesday to insert screws into his foot.
Egan fractured the navicular bone in his right foot on Saturday night against the Brisbane Lions, and it was expected that he had played his last game for the year after scans revealed the injury.
Thompson said Egan was now buoyed after receiving the word from the doctors to begin non-weight bearing training this week, with an aim to get back on the track within two to three weeks.
"We've got some good news from the surgeon, and I'm not a doctor or a surgeon, but the way I summarise it is, he will be back doing some active training next week and quite a chance to play in the last week of the finals, if we happen to be there," Thompson said.
Is 3 weeks a realistic goal for Egan? I would have thought it might be closer to 2 months before one could think about running and jumping after having 3 screws inserted into a navicular. Anyone had any experience with this type of injury?
Not directly, but lessons need to be learnt from James Hird - he played too soon after a navicular stress # a few years ago, then it caused all sorts of problems...........culminating in bone grafts/surgery and more surgery, so he ended up needing more time off than he would have needed for the # to heal in the 1st place !!
IMHO - Given the fact that there are enough Cats players to choose from, they are better off resting Egan and making sure that his foot totally heals and that he is ready for 2008. GO CATS!!
I actually have tickets to the game -- only the third AFL game I been to .... now only if someone could explain to me the rules .... roll on the World Cup
