The Bendigo Advertiser are reporting:
Spirits high in Bendigo camp
Quote:
TEAM chemistry is one of the main factors behind the Jimmy Possum Bendigo Spirit’s superb start to its inaugural Women’s National Basketball League season, according to forward Karen Ashby.

The Spirit has surprised many basketball fans by winning four of its first six games.

In comparison, fellow rookie club Christchurch is winless after seven matches.

Ashby said the Spirit’s form is as much about team chemistry as it is pure talent.

‘‘I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how well we’ve gelled as a group,’’ Ashby said on the eve of tonight’s encounter with Bulleen.

‘‘Not that I expected things to be horrible or anything like that.

‘‘We’re a new team and a whole group of girls together for the first time.

‘‘There are no ego problems in this group . . . everyone gets along really well and we enjoy spending time together.’’ Ashby’s consistent form - averaging 13 points and six rebounds per game - is another reason behind the Spirit’s strong start.

‘‘As a group we’ve only played one bad game and that was against Perth,’’ Ashby said.

‘‘It was a disappointing loss, but we didn’t dwell on it.’’ Tonight, Ashby confronts her old team the Bulleen Boomers.

She spent last season with the Boomers before joining the Spirit.

‘‘Bulleen was fantastic to me and they gave me a great opportunity,’’ Ashby said.’‘ They have a very good team and will be hard to beat.’’ Ashby, who lives in Ballarat, was not going to play WNBL this season, but the Spirit’s formation changed her mind.

‘‘Once the Spirit came about I jumped at it because of the country Victoria alignment,’’ she said.

‘‘It was nothing against Bulleen, I had a great time with them.’’ Ashby commutes to Bendigo for training twice a week.

She combines her work as a podiatrist with her basketball commitments.
‘‘I’ve just dropped back to four days a week of work because it was getting a bit hard working full-time,’’ Ashby said.

‘‘It’s challenging to juggle both, but I enjoy it.’’
