The first day of competition at the 2005 Senior Games of San Antonio featured some heated rivalries in cycling Saturday.
Larry Czelusta won the gold medal in the 55-59 age group in the 20K road race over a multiloop route at Texas Research Park. Czelusta, who is a San Antonio podiatrist and world-class duathlete, finished closely behind Don Merritt of Dallas, who was the 20K winner in the 50-54 age division.
No times were kept in the road race.
The cycling competition continues today, along with archery, bowling, horseshoes and table tennis at several Alamo City venues.
Czelusta quickly broke into a small lead with Merritt and two other riders, but surged to a small solo gap over Merritt and the rest of the field after about 15 miles.
The lead was short-lived, though, as Merritt, who is an accomplished sprinter, overtook Czelusta and maintained a lead of two bike lengths to the finish line.
