Default Condys Crystals

After recommending Condys crystals to a patient presenting with pitted keratolysis, I was surprised when he rang me up and let me know that it is now discontinued. I was just wondering if someone could shed some light on why this has happened... I have had quite a high success rate with this method. Are there any other commercial preps I can recommend?

I would think you could still buy Potassium Permanganate (Condy's I think) from a chemical supplier. I also had a Pt tell me pharmacies say they can no longer provide it, in Aus anyway.

Default No Condys

Have found this also, no problem with the product, simply a problem with the suppliers to Aus.

Curious as to what others use instead, without PP I have used...

General hygiene (including regular footbaths, changing socks etc etc)

3% Formalin swabbed a few times daily depending on extent of hyperhidrosis.

Default re KMnO4

My patients can`t buy KMnO4 from the pharmacy but the pharmacist willingly sold me some in a bulk container as it`s not packaged for general sale to the public. KMno4 is an oxidising agent and must be used very dilute, something patients can`t always be trusted with.

Talking KMNO4 crystals

I recommended these to one of my patients(as I often do), who happened to breed/race pidgeons. I advised him to go to the chemist and buy some, but he said he had a container full of it already. Apparently they put it in to the pidgeons water, to keep them healthy and bug free! So you could try a pet shop?? Also another patient said he already had some, as he worked in a garden centre. They use it for cleaning out their pots. Just a thought, which might help........ :)

Red face Potassium Permanganate

I think that I read that Potassium Permanganate is used as a reprocessing agent for illegal drugs. Perhaps this is why it is no longer on pharmacy shelves.
However it is available to podiatrists from the Compounding Dept at Belvedere Park Pharmacy in Seaford Victoria Tel: 03 97862703

Default Potassium Permanganate Footbaths

Hi all,

As you say, it's important to give as much information as you can on how the patient should use these. They should only use 2 or 3 crystals in a bowl of warm water - any more and they get a great fake tan

There are many australian chemists who stock Potassium Permanganate or Condys Crystals make sure you ask a chemist, they will probably defer you to some other product but as someone who has used it for many years, it is still readily available in a small tablet bottle size for about 6 dollars australian. A few years back, I was once questioned by a guy about our use of Condys crystals.
He worked for Pfizer pharmaceuticals, and he was astonished that we advised its use to our patients.
He believed that it was carcinogenic.
I just stopped advising its use then, did not look any further into it though.

G'day all,

I had a similar problem, and when quizzing a local pharmacist, was told that the company David Craig, who imported it, was changing hands and was not bringing it in whilst the compant was handing over. They are also responsible for Formalin Solution, something else that I've used for pitted keratolysis with good success. As far as I know, David Craig has recommenced importing the Condy's Crystals and they are avaiable in the pharmacy (well, the pharmacies up here in Bendigo anyway?). Formalin is still not available here commertially though.
Cheers!

Default Re: Condys Crystals

Hello again,

To satisfy my curiosity about the safety of using KMnO4,
I contacted Bill Statham author of 'The Chemical Maze' ,`What's Really in Your Basket'.

Quote:
Hi Elizabeth, I have provided the following FYI.

Potassium permanganate is a suspected gastrointestinal/liver; neuro and
respiratory toxicant according to the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical
Substances (RTECS).

European Union - Classification & Labelling for POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE
.Oxidizing
.Contact with combustible material may cause fire
.Harmful
.Harmful if swallowed
.Dangerous for the environment
.Very toxic to aquatic organisms

View MSDSs for Potassium permanganate at:
http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/P6005.htm and
http://physchem.ox.ac.uk/msds/PO/pot...manganate.html and
http://www.sciencelab.com/xMSDS-Pota...ganate-9927406

Hope this information is useful.

Kind regards,
Bill

Have not looked at the data sheets thoroughly yet, but I think that I would still be hesitant to recommend the use of Condys crystals.
