Dear colleagues,
I'd like to bring the A-FOOTPRINT project to the attention of the Podiatry Arena community.
A-FOOTPRINT is a 4 year project funded under the 7th Framework Programme in the Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies Cooperation Work Programme and has an overall budget of €5.3M. The consortium comprises 12 partners across 7 European countries. The project is organised as nine integrated work packages which will develop new patient information systems to enable more effective intelligent diagnostics and prescribing protocols for personalised orthoses. Computer-aided design software linked to biomechanical/gait optimisation routines will enable clinicians and technicians to design highly personalised orthoses. Innovative manufacturing lies at the hearst of the project, exploiting the capabilities of layer/additive manufacturing techniques to enable new orthotic products to be developed. The research and technology developments within A-FOOTPRINT will be combined in a fully integrated system with the production of prototype devices demonstrated within a SME pilot factory.

3d printing. I have a four question sentence: Yeah? and? so? what?

It's got great potential, but in order to get the material characteristics I want, its too slow and/ or too expensive at the moment. Which is why Reprap is something I hold dear: http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page

FEA foot models + FEA orthotic models, now that's the way forward. I got the orthotic models for designs that could only really be manufactured using additive technology, but I can't do the subject specific FEA foot models so have had to artificially load the orthotic models.

Anyway, what do I know, I'm just a shamopodist working in the quite corner of the UK, who's been redesigning foot orthosis in light of 3d printing for the last 4 years in between cutting toe-nails.

My work is all self-funded.

In response to the previous post well done on your endeavors. Our approach is to tackle this through a well funded project with an interdisciplinary team of researchers.
