Default althetic training

not a bad idea, as a lot of podiatrists attempt to be sports oriented. The additional knowlege and experience often helps if you want to become a podiatrist for sports teams or for a major college.

Smile Degree in Athletic Training

Hi there -

Your question is not a studpid question at all. Many applicants and enrollees have undergraduate degrees in Sports Medicine. So, it's great to have a bachelor's degree in athletic training, especially when there are so many injuries to the feet and ankles when involved with sports. However, you would have to meet the minimum admission requirements before applying to the colleges of podiatric medicine here in the US.
Please visit our website at http://www.aacpm.org for information on these requirements as well as direct links to all the colleges.

If you have any additional questions please contact me at carolg@aacpm.org
Thank you,
Carol :)

If the 'friends' are interested in podiatry, it should not matter what undergrad degree they have done. There is a lot of sports involved in podiatry (especially biomechanics) and a lot of podiatrists involved in sports (footwear design, gait analysis, improved efficiency and economy of movement). There are also a lot of other things aside from sport which your friends may find interesting (medicine, research, microbiology, paediatrics, gerontology), there is a much broader scope of practice for podiatrists than there is for athletics training. I guess it all comes down to what you want to do with the training, if they are interested in feet and improving people's quality of life by treating feet then a degree in podiatry is well worth it! :)
