Hospital Pays $700,000 Settlement Over Medicare Claims
Accused Podiatrist No Longer Working For Hospital
Quote:
SPARTANBURG -- Spartanburg Regional Health Care has agreed to pay the United States more than $700,000.
The payment is part of a settlement.
During an internal audit, hospital officials found improper Medicare claims filed by a podiatrist
The hospital turned those findings over to the government.
Investigators said the podiatrist treated patients and filed Medicare claims without an order from the attending physician.
"Through its timely and thorough actions, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System followed the law to the letter with this situation - immediately reporting findings from an internal audit to the United States government," said hospital spokesperson Betsy McMillan in a news release.
"Our voluntary disclosure, termination of the physician, and full cooperation toward settlement of this case shows our understanding and commitment to the laws governing the Medicare program," she said.
