It has been a trying, exciting and streesful 4 weeks.

But .

I have done it.

I am now an Australian Registered Pod and working in Sydney New South Wales Australia.

Just about to complete my first week in practice here.

And more importantly earn a few dollars.

So i sold up in the UK left a job of 20 years sold the house and car and ventured south on a wing and a prayer.

Just got to find somewhere to rent here . Which will be hard as rentals are expensive and hard to locate.

I hope to live in the RYDE area of Sydney as it will be convenient for work.

So i am very relieved to be up and running .

the whole journey started in April 2005 when i posted on this forum looking for a job.

I found a job and more importantlly a sponsor.

So the paperwork trail started in may 2005.

Got visa 457 jan 2006.

As i am an old git with the diploma i had to sit a competency exam in order to get reg here.

So sold up and left uk july 19 2006.

sat competency exam and University of Sydney Pod School and fortunately passed. Otherwise back to uk i would have gone.

Then CPR Anaphylaxxis care of St John , which is mandatory for reg here. THEN GOT REG WITH auspod council then got reg with New South Wales Health Board. then started work.

That was a very busy and (how many ff'ss in that word) stressful 4 weeks.

So anyway all is well and i am working in a two site practice here in sunny sydney.

the practices are 38 kms apart but in sydney money that is 1 to 1.5 hours travel depending on the traffic each way twice a week.

When i get a place to live in the middle of the two practices journey times will reduce.

If you are not so old and have the degree it is a much faster and easier journey.

What aus wants is degree, money, and wife and 3 children.

Loads of points and no need for a sponsor.

Do it the way i did it and it is a very risky business.

Sorry David...but all this way and you went to "Sunny" Sydney. I thought all the Poms had heard of Queensland !! That is why I moved to " Perfect " Queensland with my Pommy husband 4 yrs ago ( from Sydney ).

Good luck David....sunny Lowestoft will never be the same again.

Just a few questions, I dont know much about the process.

1. With a degree do you sit the exam
2. What is a sponsor, do you mean employer? what's their function in the process.
3. You stated...What aus wants is degree, money, and wife and 3 children. How much money? Got the other 2.

If you have the degree you do not have to sit the Stage 2 exam.

You can reg .

Only requirement is an Aussie CPR and Anaphylaxxis which st john ambulance do here.

Choose the state you wish to work in as after you have reg with Aus Pod Council you then need to reg with State Health Board.

A sponsor is an employer who undertakes to sponsor you and your visa. This is for 2 years usually. This visa is directly related to your job so you are trapped for the 2 years.

You can enter as an independent migrant if:

Under 45

Have a profession in demand eg Podiatry

Are able to reg with the authorities.

Also nice is a family with kids under 16 and a spouse.

Money.

Well in Sydney i would suggest that you would need at least $500k Aus which is 250000 Pounds UK.

Housing here as i am finding out is expensive.

Tried to find rental here today.

$350 per week gets you a HOVEL.

So i am starting to cry.

And i can hear trudi laughing as QLD is far cheaper than Sydney.

$350 will probably get you acreage !! My neighbour's house is up for rent at $400, but that includes a great view of Surfers Paradise and 4 acres.
And.... we need more Podiatrists on the Gold Coast, basically everyone has at least a 2 week wait list.

But I am not actually laughing David, just a smug smile !!

I am a newly qualified pod here in the UK, and with a husband and 3 children under the age of 16. I would love to find work and relocate to Australia, but unsure of how to get on about it. So any help will be greatly appreciated.

After talking to my husband, he's now given me the thumbs up, and if I could get a job there, then we can sell up and move.

I moved out here 5 months ago from Ireland, and the bit that took me the longest was getting my skills assessed, I did not need to sit the exam, I sent them a certified copy of my degree, my LA certificate, a current first aid certificate and 2 references from previous employers. Thats what took me the longest, but the whole process only took me 4 months (felt like longer). Although I didn't have a family to relocate.

whatever happened to trudi (powell)....... lovely girl but 20 years later she's married a pom and moved north???? ......... trudi, "i say love, i say pet"*, future climate models have queensland and western australia 5 deg C hotter by 2030.......and the summers are too b....y hot now .............. ATTENTION! all incoming podiatrists restrict your searches to the southern states Victoria, southern New South Wales, south-east South Australia and Tasmania ....... don't let a beautiful BLONDE lead you astray ......... Unlike Canberra bloody hot and isolated one day.....snow and miserable for the other 7 months, the next !! And plenty of wealthy patients move north with their millions to retire...and not enough Pods.
